Student Successes
What languages do you speak?
I speak English fluently and Armenian conversationally.
Why do you teach?
I teach because I want to bridge the gap between education and understanding. Many students give up on the joy of learning because they don’t understand the tools provided by educators who might not see their struggles. My goal is to be that bridge and help students realize their greatest asset will always be their mind.
What three words would your students use to describe you?
Patient, kind, and understanding.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. It taught me a lot about humanity, the connections people make, and how to view the world around us.
What is one memorable moment you've had while tutoring?
During my time as a private and professional tutor, I’ve had the privilege of working with a diverse range of students, including those with learning disabilities. One experience that stands out was with a student who had ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and struggled with violent outbursts when faced with challenging problems. Our first session was particularly jarring, as I had never encountered a situation like this before. That evening, I spent hours researching Pokémon, a game he was deeply passionate about, determined to connect with him on his terms.
From then on, I incorporated Pokémon into our chemistry lessons, relating each concept to elements of the game. I framed challenges as battles against "gyms," akin to the tough areas where players face bosses in the game. This approach not only engaged him but also helped him model his behavior after the characters he admired, especially Ash, who embodies perseverance and self-improvement. Over time, his outbursts ceased, and his grades soared from a D in chemistry to a B+ by the end of the semester.
Today, he’s thriving as a sophomore in college, pursuing a degree in chemistry. That journey, watching him grow and succeed, remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my career as a mentor and educator.
